STEPHEN

by Nelson C. Boyd

Did you hear in the lesson this morning
Of the martyr who fell by the stone?
Did you stop friend to consider
That he went to a heavenly home?

Did you see in the life of Stephen
What it means to the soul of men?
Don't you think that he did his duty
When he lifted the load of sin?

Do you remember the Saint that was with him
Not lifting a hand to defend?
Was it the spiritual part of the lesson
The respect that he showed for him?

Oh friend, then why do we wonder
When Stephen made it a plan
That you and I too must suffer
For the life of another man?

And aren't we too in a court room
On trial by a jury of sin?
And can't we too be like Stephen
Faithful unto the end?

Aren't we a Saul that is standing
Helping his robe to prepare?
Knowing dear brother within us
The wonderful promise so fair?

Does it teach is to serve the devil
Or to hide behind one in sin?
Or should we worship the Master
Asking daily that he let us in?

Oh the sorrow for he who is hiding
When he knows in his heart he is wrong;
Oh the joy for him that's abiding
To gain the heavenly home.

And he who works with a purpose
Serving the Master in right
Will surely my friend, be a martyr
When he gets to the end of the fight.

Oh that we all could be Stephens
Ready to die by the grace
That our heavenly Father has given us
And realize the worth of his faith
